Many pet contests rely on simple upvotes or average star ratings. At PawVersus, we chose the ELO rating system鈥攆amous for chess and competitive gaming鈥攂ecause it models a crucial concept: the strength of the opponent matters.
The Flaw of Simple Likes
In a system based on total likes, a pet that has been on the platform for two years will always outrank a pet that joined last week, regardless of their current charm. This system rewards longevity, not performance.
The ELO Advantage
ELO is a zero-sum system. When Pet A (ELO 1500) wins a match against Pet B (ELO 1500), both scores adjust slightly. But, if Pet A (ELO 2000) loses to Pet C (ELO 1000), Pet C gains a massive number of points, and Pet A loses a lot.
This ensures:
- Rapid Adjustment: Newcomers who are truly adorable quickly climb the ranks.
- Accuracy: A high ELO means your pet has consistently defeated other high-ELO pets.
- Resistance to Manipulation: Spam voting a low-ranked pet has little impact against a champion.
PawVersus uses ELO because we want the champion to be proven through consistent, high-stakes victory, not just popularity.
